The need to take notes on a device or look at a screen during appointments can be a barrier to meaningful connections,\u201d says Dr. Rajesh Girdhari, a family doctor at Unity Health Toronto, St. Michael&#8217;s Hospital, and Digital Health Lead in DFCM\u2019s Office of Health System Partnerships. \u201cOur goal is to investigate and accelerate the use of AI scribe technology in primary care to benefit family doctors, patients and the health system.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">Although meaningful connections are key, family physicians spend an <\/span><a style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit;font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;background-color: #e6e7e8\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28893811\/\">average of 45%<\/a><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\"> of their clinical hours logging data into a computer. This impacts not only the quality of <\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">clinician<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">-patient interactions but also contributes to an increase in <\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">clinician<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\"> burnout, career dissatisfaction and ultimately the shortage of <\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">primary care clinicians<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;As a user of AI scribe for over a year, three things are for certain:<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My joy of practicing medicine and seeing patients has returned. I can now focus on what I went into medicine for: my patients, their stories and their care; and finally, I am so glad that from this grant we can offer this opportunity and support to our colleagues clinicians<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif\">, there has been limited uptake because of system variation, privacy concerns,\u00a0compatibility issues and lack of change management support.
